Jan Peter Toennies fostered an environment in which young diploma students were trusted and valued as though they were seasoned scientists. You were encouraged to present your experimental results to renowned scientists, whose work you had studied. I found this experience highly motivating. It was one of the reasons why I chose to pursue a career in science.
